Dustin Kimura, 19 years old, won the amateur 145lb title at the mixed martials arts event, Destiny: The 2nd Coming, on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Filcom Center in Waipahu. In the second round, Dustin dropped his opponent with a right hand strike and used a rear naked choke submission to earn his win and the title.
Dustin began training at Tactical Strength at the recommendation of his Jiu-Jitsu coach, Rylan Lizares, of Gracie Technics Academy. Coach Darin put Dustin through six weeks of grueling circuits to simulate an entire MMA fight. In the first week of training, Dustin could not finish his training circuit without throwing up. By week six, Dustin had cut his rest periods between circuits from 2 minutes to 30 seconds and completed the entire training session with a 20lb vest on. Dustin said that, “I definitely feel that since training at Tactical, my game has gone to another level.”
Congratulations Dustin! All of your hard work and dedication paid off! We look forward to more impressive victories in the future.
Update: Here’s a video of the fight, Dustin Kimura vs. Vernon Perengit. Dustin is in the black and white shorts.

Derrick Low trains with Tactical Strength

Derrick Low is currently playing professional basketball for SPO Rouen in the Pro A league in France.
In between his pro basketball stints with the Sydney Spirit and SPO Rouen, Derrick worked out with Tactical Strength & Conditioning. Derrick is no stranger to Tactical, having first trained with Coach Darin while in high school at Iolani. Tactical worked with several Iolani teams, including boys basketball and then later boys volleyball, of which Derrick was a member of the teams.
Derrick had an illustrious high school career. In each of his last three seasons at Iolani, they won the state boys basketball title and he was named the High School State Player of the Year and Gatorade State Player of the Year. Derrick will also probably be known as one of the best basketball players to have played at Washington State. The former All Pac-10 guard helped lead WSU to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA basketball tournament in his senior season and is ranked highly on WSU’s all-time lists in numerous categories.
It was great to watch Derrick in high school and then later at Washington State. He’s a really humble guy and a hard-worker. We love it that he’s always up to the challenge! Derrick is having a great season and we look forward to working with him in the off-season.
Here’s a video of one of Derrick’s training sessions with Tactical.
Defining Strength and Power
In the next few weeks, we will be discussing the process of “Building an Explosive Athlete.” This will be a multiple article discussion covering various areas of building explosiveness. However, before we start, we must first define what it means to be explosive, powerful and strong. Many people use these terms loosely and carelessly. We will try to define these terms to create a clear understanding of how they differ from and/or relate to each other. [CONTINUE READING THIS POST..]
Gracie Technics Academy
I would like to send out a huge mahalo to Rylan Lizares and his boys at Gracie Technics Academy.
Rylan is a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Professor Pedro Sauer and the owner/founder of Gracie Technics Academy. Rylan trains at Tactical Strength and he invited me to his “open mat” session on Thursday night at his new location above OTM Fight Shop on South Beretania Street. I was pretty excited to experience my first jiu-jitsu class and the guys at Gracie Technics did not disappoint. [CONTINUE READING THIS POST..]
